Newsletter No: 6 April 2008

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students

Term 1 has been a very busy and successful Term. The academic programme was highlighted with our special Academic Assembly where we recognised the outstanding achievements of many of our students in the 2007 NCEA National qualifications. Our debating teams have performed exceptionally well with many notable victories. Our Senior team is competing in the top Auckland competition. The summer sports programme has been extensive and will be summarised in a Newsletter in Term 2. Our music groups perform regularly at school assemblies and the Kapa Haka Group has grown in stature and in numbers.

Features for Term 2 include the Musical production of ‘Bugsy Malone’ and the unveiling of the ‘Icon’ of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Christ Child in the school Chapel.

SPECIAL CHARACTER

Term 1 has seen the Special Character of the College displayed through the variety of Masses and Liturgies we have been able to participate in.

As Ash Wednesday was on Waitangi Day a special prayer service, led by the Principal, was held during our whole school assembly on the following day. The attendance at the weekly optional Mass, held on Wednesdays at 1.25pm, has been well attended by staff and students and students are now attending as class groups.

The Opening Mass was held on 28 February and the Prefects for 2008 were anointed and blessed with oil by Fr Ezio Blasoni. This year the school initiated the handing over of the Sancta Maria Candle. The two youngest boy and girl in the College, presented the 2008 candle to Charney Rooza, the head girl, and Scot Crowe the Head Boy. They will pass it back to them at the end of the year for safe keeping until 2009.

Year 9 students participated in a Retreat Day, held at school on 29 February. The theme was all of us and the students were grouped according to their Houses. They came in mufti and the money raised went to the Caritas Appeal. They also donated food items for the St Vincent de Paul Foodbank.

The Term 1 Mufti Day raised $1265 for the Child Cancer Foundation and also over 1000 food items for families in need.

The Holy Thursday Liturgy was an re-enactment of the Passion of Christ and the students are to be commended for the reverent way they participated in this liturgy.

The Liturgy Committee has grown significantly this year and we now have about 30 senior students and over 70 junior students who assist with the planning and preparation of our liturgical celebrations.

I thank you all for your on going support as we continue on this incredible journey.

I hope that you have a safe and happy holiday break.

God Bless You All

Paul Daley

AUCKLAND SCHOOLS DEBATING

Sancta Maria are proud to be hosting the 2008 Junior Open rounds of the Auckland Schools Debating Competition. The competition takes place on Monday evenings every fortnight.

The first round took place on 3 March with fourteen debates taking place between 4.30 and 6.30pm. The moot debated was “Financial rewards should be offered for the solving of crimes”. Other East Auckland schools including St Kents, Sacred Heart, Macleans, Glendowie, Edgewater, Botany and Howick sent teams to Sancta Maria to compete.

A number of enthusiastic Sancta Maria students from years 9 and 10 debated and assisted with setting up classrooms for the debates and guiding visitors. It was an extremely enjoyable evening and we look forward to hosting the remainder of the competition.

New Zealand’s future depends on the next generation of Technologists, Engineers and Scientist…These are the people who use their creativity, knowledge and skills to make new things and solve problems. This is the reason that the Technology Department at Sancta Maria College have forged links with Futureintech, an organisation committed to giving our students knowledge and information about future careers opportunities in these fields. This term Futureintech have brought 2 of their industry ambassadors into school to hold seminars with our Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 Technology students. Our students were privileged to spend time with Johanna Catoto from Emerald Foods and Christie Stanton from Fisher and Paykel Health Care.

Thank you to all the families who billeted and to the mothers who assisted with lunches on Sunday and Monday. SYNOPSIS:

Sancta Maria is proud to present the theatre production of ‘Bugsy Malone’, originally released in 1976, written and directed by Alan Parker, with music by Paul Williams.

A cast of Sancta Maria youngsters play Prohibition-Era mobsters in this tongue-in-cheek tribute to the 1920s gangster flick. The play follows the main character, the man ‘everybody loves’, Bugsy Malone (Joseph Xulue Year 11), who is somewhat of a drifter, going from ‘this and that’ trying to earn an honest buck, mainly by finding potential boxers, although occasionally doing work for the likes of Fat Sam (Eric Vivares Year 13), the boss of a mafia gang. It’s at Fat Sam’s that we meet the majority of the other main characters, such as Tallulah (Olivia Caldwell Year 13), the lead performer at the speakeasy as well as being Sam’s girl, and Blousey Brown (Nicolette Nes Year 10), an aspiring singer who dreams of making it to Hollywood someday.

When a rival of Fat Sam’s, Dandy Dan (Harry Anderson Year 13), begins to muscle in on his ‘turf’, Sam has to fight back to protect his empire – cue plenty of flying whipped cream. This cream pie-flinging, pinstripe-wearing, pint-sized classic is charming and entertaining for all age groups. One of the greatest aspects of this play is the music. The songs are both catchy and enjoyable to listen to, and you will be humming from start to finish, and even days later at work and at school.

This mafia-mobster-splurge-gun-wielding classic will capture your heart and your imagination.
