Newsletter No:      12                                                                                           21 September 2009

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Term 3 is nearly completed and the warmer weather is drying out those fields.  To those of you who suffered the winter mud you will be pleased to know that the Board of Trustees  is embarking on a programme to have our fields drained.  We hope to have at least 2 of the fields (one soccer, one rugby) drained over the summer.  As finance allows we will eventually drain all the fields.

This should:

a)  Keep those in charge of the washing happy!

b)  Allow the Physical Education Department to have better use of the fields throughout the winter terms.

The Gymnasium is nearing completion; however the hand over date has been extended to 25 October.  While this is frustrating, the facility is certainly worth waiting for and we need to be grateful for what we are getting.  Meanwhile, the progress on Sancta Maria Catholic Primary School is excellent with completion date being in time for the opening of the school year in February.

The Year 10 students have completed their ‘Camp Week’.  Throughout the week there were 3 events.  The Camp, The One Day Retreat, and the Technology Challenge.

At the Camp they were challenged to overcome their fears, to work together as a team and to take care of and to encourage one another.  The Technology Challenge required team work, showing initiative and planning.  The Retreat gave students the opportunity to reflect on the reasons that we are at Sancta Maria College, our Special Character and to put Christ at the focal point of our lives particularly when we are faced with choices.  All three activities gave our students the opportunity to experience in a real way our 5 key words:

We Believe, Think, Grow, Care and Act.

I encourage you all to have these words as a focus in your homes.

God Bless

Paul Daley

Principal

SPECIAL CHARACTER – Mrs G Devoy

RETREAT

September is a busy month at Sancta Maria College. As part of their camp week experience, the Year 10 students were involved in a day long Retreat. This retreat was run by members of LOGOS, a Marist youth work project which works alongside young people encouraging and guiding them to make their faith real and relevant in today’s world.

The theme of the Retreat was Choices and over the day the students were involved in a range of activities that allowed them to explore choices that they face in their everyday lives.  The LOGOS team were able to offer our students options and strategies when faced with challenging situations.

The day finished with a liturgy which included the Sacrament of Reconciliation and a time of reflection. It was wonderful to see so many students participating in this liturgy. We would like to thank the priests from the surrounding parishes who conducted this service.

MINISTERS OF EUCHARIST

A group of 18 students are currently undergoing an induction process with Fr Ezio, in which they become Ministers of the Eucharist. I have been very impressed with the dedication and enthusiasm shown by these students. It is important that we have a group of students who are able to make this commitment in order to ensure that the College has Ministers for weekly and special Masses. If your son or daughter is interested in becoming a Special Minister of Holy Communion, please let me know so that I can create a register for next year when we will have another induction course.

I hope you all have a safe and relaxing break over the holidays.

PTFA CULTURAL/ARTS/MUSIC FESTIVAL 2009

Planning and practices of Cultural Performances are underway for the up-coming Sancta Maria College PTFA Cultural/Arts/Music Festival 2009 at school and outside school during lunch time and after school.   We have a large number of students who are involved in this activity.

The performance will include items from our school community groups such as the Tongan, Irish, Samoan, Indian, Filipino and Korean.  Our Kapa Haka is sharp and ready to put on a world class performance in their brand new costume. The World Rhythm Dance is a performance created by a student group specifically for the event blending together sounds and rhythms of contemporary and cultural mix that will be uniquely performed by our Year 7 and 8 students.    We showcase further our ‘talent developed’ as our very own Gospel Choir ‘goes international’ featuring tunes of multilingual favourites.  The Latin American student group will swing and sway their heels to the funky rhythm of South American moves while our students’ band will enthusiastically entertain our ‘Kiwiana’ sentiment to warm our heart.

The performances promise to be up-beat, heart-warming and festive as we celebrate the second Sancta Maria College PTFA Cultural/Arts/Music Festival.

We would like to thank our parents who are currently very involved in various cultural and student groups in their performance preparation.    And we look forward to welcoming new inquiries and support from our school community.    Please contact the school and PTFA.

What is the PTFA fundraising for?

Term 4 we will be opening our new gymnasium and inside that gymnasium will be a fitness room.  All of the money raised this year by the PTFA and from the Cultural Festival will go towards purchasing the fitness equipment required to kit out this room.  It will be a room that will be accessible to every student in the school and of great benefit to them all.  So please support our last two fundraisers for the year – Nigel Latta Evening and Cultural Festival.
