Newsletter No:      14                                                                                           28 October  2009

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

As we approach the time for our seniors to leave to prepare for their NCEA exams we encourage them to use wisely the time they have left here at school and the study time that they will have during the exams.  All students should have a well structured study plan and to have confirmed the time of individual exams.  Every year someone arrives at the wrong time for an exam, either in the morning for an afternoon exam or vice versa.  If a student misses an exam because they got the time wrong there is nothing we can do about it.  Please confirm exam times with your son / daughter.

The Middle school students will start their exams on

12 November and we sense that they are preparing well for them.

The best way you can help your child is by being encouraging, providing healthy refreshments and keeping the house quiet and peaceful.  Give them a quiet space for revision and remind them that staring at notes doesn’t mean anything is going in.  They need to use strategies to ensure the material is being absorbed – writing it down, repeating it aloud, testing themselves.  Students should be revising exam techniques using past papers and to plan how they will approach the questions.  Timing is paramount and they must be clear as to how long they will spend on each booklet.  Students need to be encouraged to stay for the duration of the exam.  You never really “finish” an exam.  If they have completed all that they can do and spare time is available they need to check and recheck their answers  and to reread questions they have not answered to make sure that they can not at least start an answer.  Finally, accept that children who are worried about exams will tend to be grumpy.  Reassure them that you value their efforts.

Of course we wish them well and hope that they all receive outcomes that reflect their efforts.

To our Year 13 students who leave us after the exams, thank you for your significant contribution to Sancta Maria College.  As foundation students you have assisted in the establishment of our culture and values.  We thank you for this and wish you every success and happiness in the future.

All senior students will leave after the Thanksgiving Mass on 11 November and it is compulsory that they return by 6.30pm for a roll check and the Senior Prizegiving.  Each student is to bring a plate of food for supper.

SPECIAL CHARACTER – Mrs G Devoy

This term opened with the sad news of the Samoan Tsunami., an event which has touched so many people in New Zealand. Amongst our community, we have had some students who have been affected by this disaster. In response to the great need of the Samoan people, we launched an appeal to help restore their lives. Students were asked to bring a household item that would help in the rebuilding of homes and communities and also to bring money for a mufti day.

The response to this appeal was overwhelming. Many staff and students wore lava lavas in solidarity with the people of Samoa. The school community raised $3827.00, which is the most ever raised by our school. The amount of goods brought in was truly amazing. Volunteers from St Vincent de Paul came to collect the supplies and were astonished by the volume and the quality. The van was crammed full of items that will soon be sent to Samoa. I would like to thank you all for the generosity and open heartedness you showed for those less fortunate than ourselves.

We are currently selling bandanas for Canteen and this has proved to be a popular initiative, with many students purchasing the bandanas. Proceeds from the sales go towards supporting teenagers affected by cancer. This does not only mean those who are suffering with cancer, but their siblings as well, as often relations also experience difficulty during such a harrowing time. This is the first time we have supported this charity and I would like to thank the Senior Leadership Team for allowing it to go ahead.

The Rosary is said every Tuesday in October in the Chapel and you are welcome to join us in saying Mary’s prayer.

Next Wednesday at our school Mass in the Chapel, the new Ministers of the Eucharist will be commissioned by Fr Ezio. I would like to congratulate these students for their commitment and also to thank them for volunteering to take up this worthwhile ministry.

Early next month, we will celebrate the feasts of All Saints and All Souls Days. We will be gathering the names of those who have died, in order that we can pray for them. If there is someone you would like prayed for over this time, please let me know or send their name with your child to school. You can contact me on 2744081 extn 226.

You will be measured for your uniform in private (not the shop), with a choice of either a male or female staff member to take measurements.

Any student requiring a made-to-measure garment needs to place an order by the 27/11/09. If you do not place a uniform order by this date we are not prepared to guarantee you will have a uniform for the start of 2010.

LIBRARY NEWS

This week we welcome Ms Aneleh Midgley to Sancta Maria College as our Library Assistant. Aneleh comes to us from the University of Auckland with a love of reading and research in art history as her specialist interest. Aneleh worked at Sancta Maria College as the Arts Co-ordinator in 2007.

The Library is open every school day from 8.15am to 4.30pm. We currently have study guides in most subjects available for Senior exam revision. Senior students are required to return all Library books by Tuesday 3rd November. However if books are needed for exam study, students may arrange with Library staff an extended loan until the 27th November.

In the year 7 and 8 Library Skills programme this term we are focussing on online interactive reading blogs and other web based reading activities. Most year 7 students [and some year 8] have now posted comments about books they have read, on the National Library reading blog http://createreaders.natlib.govt.nz  This is an extremely informative blog site to find highly commended books [especially New Zealand] for children and young adults. We will also be looking at the following genre [theme] based international blog sites during Term 4;

www.librarything.com and   http://cool-reads.co.uk/
