Newsletter No:      01                                                                                           4 February 2010

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome to Sancta Maria College for the 2010 Academic Year.  I hope that you have all had a relaxing and restful time with your family and friends over the Christmas Holidays.  The staff  have been back at meetings over the past few weeks and we are ready to start the new year with enthusiasm.

The school roll will be approximately 970 students as we welcome our new students to our school.  We also extend a very warm welcome to our new staff who are joining us this year.

Ms D Lawrence          HOD Art

Mr J Rogers                HOD Commerce

Mr L Naicker              HOD Mathematics

Miss K Bradley           Social Science

Mrs A Du Burgess    Accounting

Ms W Laux                 Science / French

Mrs S Colmer             Technology

Mrs J Connolly           English

Mrs S Lewis                Guidance Counsellor

We know that they will make a significant contribution to the ongoing development of our young people at Sancta Maria College.

We are again thrilled with the NCEA results gained by the Senior School students in 2009.  The overall pass rates of 88% at Level 1, 91% at Level 2 and 85% at Level 3 are all significantly higher that the National Average and reflect positively the emphasis on Academic Excellence at the school.  A more detailed analysis will be presented in a later newsletter.   For parents of students who are in Level 1 (Year 11) this year there will be a parents evening on Thursday 4 March to explain how NCEA works.  I strongly recommend that you attend this meeting, as there have been a number of significant changes to the procedures relating to this National Assessment procedure.  Parents of students at other levels are also welcome to attend.

PARKING

With the opening  of Sancta Maria Catholic Primary School on 5 February we are anticipating major congestion at the end of the school day.  The Primary School will finish each day at 2.55pm and the College at 3.15pm.  This should alleviate some of the congestion, however historical patterns indicate that many of the College parents arrive around 3pm.

A car park is being constructed at the back of the school (off Chapel Road) for staff parking.  It is a requirement of the Traffic Management Section of Manukau City that this entry / exit off Chapel Road is for STAFF ONLY.  Parents or students must not use this car park at any time even for drop off or pick up.  There is concern regarding traffic congestion on Chapel Road and it is a Health and Safety

Issue.   Parents who wish to access the Uniform Shop must not use this entrance.

On entering the school grounds to pick up or drop off your son / daughter please abide by the following requirement.

1.  Parents / Caregivers of College Students are to use the front car park.  First entrance on the left as you come into the school driveway.

2.  Parents / Caregivers of Primary School Students are to proceed up the drive and enter the Primary School Pick

Up / Drop Off area on the right hand side of the school driveway.

3.  No cars are to proceed beyond the Pedestrian Crossing that is painted on the driveway just beyond the Primary

School Drop Off / Pick Up entrance.  This is a BUSES ONLY Area.

4.  Students are not to walk out of or into the school throughout the Chapel Road exit / entrance.

5.  Parents / Caregivers waiting for children in the Commercial Area (Bishop’s Gate) opposite the school please do not use the retailers parking spaces.

Your co-operation with all of the above is appreciated and is essential for the smooth operation of the school.

We are looking forward to a successful year.

     God Bless

Paul Daley

Principal
