Outward Bound is a worldwide organization that helps people realize their full potential through outdoor challenge and adventure. The first Outward Bound School was established in Whales in 1941 by a man named Kurt Hahn from Germany. It was founded so that young sailors would have the ability to survive tough conditions at sea by teaching them confidence and resilience. It was named Outward Bound because of its connection with the nautical term, “outward bound”. This used when boats leave the safety of the harbor for open seas.

OUTWARD BOUND Anakiwa Mission statement
‘Outward Bound New Zealand's mission is inspiring personal and social development through value based experiential learning in an outdoor environment. Outward Bound New Zealand is a charitable trust’

The Outward Bound School in Anakiwa (in the Marlborough Sounds) was established in 1962 and is instrumental in challenging people in the native beautiful bush, mountains, rivers and seaways of Marlborough. Outward Bound offers many courses for all age groups.

I went on the Mind, Body and Soul course for 16 to 18 year olds.
-I learnt many outdoor skills including sailing, kayaking, tramping and navigation.
-I developed friendships which will last a life time, left knowing that I had been pushed to my limits and had discovered that there was more to myself.
-I learnt a lot about myself, about interacting with other people, about leadership and about the environment.
-I was challenged physically and mentally throughout the course and gained a larger appreciation for the environment and all that it can offer.
-Through reflection, I developed self awareness, motivation, confidence and self responsibility.
-Through teamwork, I developed communication skills and a greater understanding of the way a team works well together.
-Through the Outward Bound course, I grew as a person through the values of responsibility, greatness, compassion, integrity and the importance of service.

Outward Bound was absolutely amazing and if I had the chance I would definitely do it again. I think everyone who has the chance to participate in the course should look at it as an opportunity of a lifetime and take the chance while they can. It is an experience that you will never forget and it is life changing.
