2011 Course Outline

What will I learn?

 

SMC Values & The Revised Translation of the Roman Missal (2 Week)

  • Understand the key words and college acronym and their meaning
  • Understand the 12 values of Sancta Maria College
  • Understand the reasons behind the revision of the translation of the Roman Missal
  • Recognise and recite the response from the Roman Missal

Jesus the Christ (5 Weeks)

  • Identity and interpret the evidence of Jesus as an historical figure
  • Explore what the Gospels reveal of the identity, role and personality of Jesus
  • Examine the crucial significance of Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection in the context of the history of salvation
  • Outline the development of the Church’s belief and teaching about Jesus.
  • Reflect on the significance of Jesus’ presence in the Church, especially the Sacraments
  • Consider how Jesus as Saviour brings forgiveness, healing and hope to the whole of creation

 

Mary: Mother of God (5 Weeks)

  • Describe a woman’s position in first century Palestine
  • Examine the way Mary is portrayed in the Gospels
  • Recognise and describe Mary’s role in the life and mission of Jesus
  • Outline the development of Christian teaching about Mary’s relationship to Jesus the Son of God and how over the centuries this has been presented in prayers, devotions and art.
  • Show how Mary and her role in the history of salvation is a model for people today

 

Assessment Block One: (4 Weeks)

During this time you are to complete the required tasks for AS90824 (“Analyse a significant theme in a sacred text”). Possible themes will have relation to the previous two topics taught. These could include (but are not limited to):

  • The Divinity of Christ
  • The Humanity of Christ
  • Christ the Saviour
  • Mary: Mother of God
  • Mary: The first disciple
  • Mary: Ark of the Covenant
A written report of you analysis is due on Friday 17 June


Bio-ethics (5 Weeks)

  • Develop and understanding of ethical principles and their application to bioethical issues
  • Identify key ideas of personhood and human dignity as it relates to biomedical ethics
  • Investigate the issues of euthanasia, in-vitro fertilisation and stem cell research with regards to ethics

 

Finding Meaning: Philosophy and Secularism (5 Weeks)

  • Analyse and Respond to different arguments for and against the existence of God
  • Recognise the relationship between philosophy, reason and faith
  • Analyse and critique the secularist world view prevalent in post-modern society
  • Review the Church’s response to secularism and relativism
  • Show understandings of Jesus as the final answer to the fundamental questions of life

 

Assessment Block Two: (4 Weeks)

During this time you are to complete the required tasks for either or both of:

Bio-ethics

AS90826 “Examine the response of a religious tradition to a contemporary ethical issue”

AND / OR

Finding Meaning: Philosophy and Secularism

AS90827 “Compare and contrast a religious tradition with a secular world view”

Both assessments are reports, that will be due on:  Friday 7 October.
