Sophie at the double

The Girls 1st XI earned a hard fought 3-3 away draw against a Waiuku side expecting a comfortable win. Two goals from striker Sophie Ruka secured a point in a topsy-turvy battle.

In cold, damp conditions the girls found themselves a goal down before finding an equaliser through a left footed shot from Sophie. After Waiuku conceded an own goal the team found itself in front. The lead did not last long as Waiuku soon drew level.

It was left to Sophie Ruka to produce another left footed strike that hit the back of the next to restore Sancta Maria College’s lead.

Going in at half time 3-2 ahead the girls sought to protect their lead as the game went into the second half. After Waiuku scored an equaliser strong defensive work from Laura Mattson, Magda Serewis and, player of the day, Abby Noble-Campbell ensured that Sancta Maria College earned a well-deserved point.

A strong and determined effort from the girls to take a point from well-organised and physical opponents.
