11PES conquer white water and fears at Wero Whitewater Park

Katie Hamilton

On Wednesday 3 June and Friday 5 June 2026, the 11PES classes went to the Wero Whitewater Park as a part of their internal assessment revolving around Kotahitanga. In this standard, students participated in team-based activities whilst applying their selected Kotahitanga strategy to analyse its effectiveness.

Our Year 11s embarked on the waves, fighting currents, and getting drenched in water. Guided by our instructors, we began by practicing paddling, encouraging us to work as a cohesive unit. As we built our confidence, we were able to manoeuvre the course, incorporating new skills such as ‘surfing’. Highlights of the day included rafts capsizing and various students such as Caylix and Magdalene falling into the river. Overall, the experience was fun and educational – teaching us principles of obedience in unsafe conditions.

On behalf of all 11PES students, thank you to the Wero Whitewater Park staff, and our teachers – especially Mr Gutry and Ms Samaeli for making this possible, it was an unforgettable experience.
