2025 Cross Country tests endurance and perseverance

On a crisp, clear winter day, Sancta Maria College students from Years 7 to 13 laced up their running shoes, rallied their house pride, and took on the annual School Cross Country. The event brought together the entire college community for a day of physical challenge, encouragement, and incredible effort across all year levels.

The cross-country course tested endurance and perseverance, but that didn’t stop our students from giving it their all. With every lap, chants of support echoed from house leaders, teachers, and fellow classmates, urging runners forward toward the finish line.

Top Finishers by Year Level

Year 7 Girls
  • 1st: Tiffany Chen (AJR2)
  • 2nd: Fionna Sok (WJR2)
  • 3rd: Harper Williams (WJR5)

Tiffany Chen led the charge in a fast-paced race, showing impressive stamina and determination from start to finish.

Year 7 Boys
  • 1st: Victor Gibson (AJR6)
  • 2nd: Ethan Lanuza (HJR3)
  • 3rd: Luigi Manuel (KJR6)

Victor’s strong pace helped him take a commanding lead, while Ethan and Luigi followed closely in an exciting finish.

Year 8 Girls
  • 1st: Ariana Neems (WJR2)
  • 2nd: Maia Ramos (AJR4)
  • 3rd: Addison Ashby (AJR5)

Ariana’s performance was powerful and confident, helping Waitematā build their house points early in the day.

Year 8 Boys
  • 1st: Matthew Bastian (HJR5)
  • 2nd: Jayden Pader (WJR7)
  • 3rd: Miguel Ancla (KJR5)

Matthew ran a tactically smart race, pacing himself well and sprinting to victory in the final stretch.

Year 9 Girls
  • 1st: Elaina Scorringe (AJR5)
  • 2nd: Clara Gallagher (AJR3)
  • 3rd: Gaia Carrozzino (WJR4)

A brilliant race by Elaina, who held off strong competition from her peers to finish first.

Year 9 Boys
  • 1st: Jason Sison (WJR7)
  • 2nd: Ryan Tam (WJR4)
  • 3rd: Mason Meszaros (HJR2)

A sweep at the top by Waitematā in the boys’ race helped strengthen their house position.

Year 10 Girls
  • 1st: Sylvia Leota (AJR8)
  • 2nd: Layan Alboutros (WJR4)
  • 3rd: Sophie Kent (KJR1)

Sylvia’s incredible drive pushed her ahead of a tightly packed group in a close finish.

Year 10 Boys
  • 1st: Cesar Garcia Soto (HJR4)
  • 2nd: Max Tay-Morrison (KJR7)
  • 3rd: Jacob Fischer (KJR6)

Cesar displayed excellent form and grit as he pulled away to claim first place.

Year 11 Girls
  • 1st: Sophia Neems (WSR5)
  • 2nd: Marthina Taboada (WSR2)
  • 3rd: Ezabella Lanuza (HSR1)

A strong performance from Sophia kept Waitematā’s winning streak alive in the senior divisions.

Year 11 Boys
  • 1st: Rogres Anton Constantine (HSR3)
  • 2nd: Stefan Kozina (WSR4)
  • 3rd: Blake Pennington (HSR5)

Rogres’s pace and power earned him the win, helping Hokianga in the house standings.

Year 12 Girls
  • 1st: Kael Marie Sunga (HSR5)
  • 2nd: Kiarna Makoare (KSR5)
  • 3rd: Raeana Flanagan (HSR3)

Kael’s excellent run showcased senior leadership and endurance.

Year 12 Boys
  • 1st: Nathan Mlinde (KSR5)
  • 2nd: Jason Cooper (WSR6)
  • 3rd: Lennard Regala (KSR3)

A strong showing from Kororāreka’s Nathan helped boost house morale in a competitive field.

Year 13 Girls
  • 1st: Scarlette Wardle (WSR2)
  • 2nd: Summer Earl (KSR2)
  • 3rd: Layla Ngapaku (ASR4)

Scarlette sprinted home with confidence, leaving a lasting impression in her final school cross country.

Year 13 Boys
  • 1st: Stephen Kurian Sajan (KSR2)
  • 2nd: David Ibrahim (HSR4)
  • 3rd: Dylan Sandall (HSR3)

Stephen ran with maturity and focus, crossing the finish line first in the final race of the day.

Overall House Results

After all the races and incredible individual performances, the house results were tallied. The atmosphere was electric as the final standings were revealed:

🥇 1st Place: Waitematā – 447 points
🥈 2nd Place: Hokianga – 395 points
🥉 3rd Place: Akaroa – 364 points
🎖️ 4th Place: Kororāreka – 339 points

A huge congratulations to Waitematā House for taking out the top spot with consistency, spirit, and plenty of first place finishes throughout the day!

The 2025 Cross Country was more than just a competition—it was a celebration of perseverance, house spirit, and sportsmanship. Every student who crossed the finish line contributed to the energy and success of the day. A massive thank you to the Sports department, staff marshals, and student leaders who made the day run smoothly.
