2026 Jazz Camp transforms passion into performance

Raynelle Ramos

On 20-22 February 2026, the second Jazz Camp was held at Willow Park Camp. Our Big Band and Jazz Combo students had the amazing opportunity to attend camp and over the course of the three days, students took any chance they had to amplify their music skills and further develop friendships. Sharing the camp with Orewa College, students were encouraged to befriend those from Orewa, quickly sharing our interest and love for music.

Students from Big Band and our Combos, led by our itinerant music teachers Lukas Fritsch, Kathleen Tomacruz, and Finn McNeil were given a schedule and two rooms to rehearse. When given free time from rehearsing, we played volleyball, football, or music.

On the final day, both schools held a joint concert in The Hall, displaying what they had been working on and improving throughout the camp. Parents and caregivers were invited, and everyone performed amazingly. As students left, it was clear that not only was this camp enjoyable, but it also created and strengthened relationships as well as improved our musical skills in readiness for the National Youth Jazz competition.

A huge thank you to Ms Shone for continuing this amazing opportunity that started last year as well as Mrs. Sullivan and Mr. Mackenzie for checking in on our progress and making sure everything went smoothly. Another big thank you to Willow Park Christian Camp for hosting us.
