Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, became the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church on 13 March 2013. He was the first pope from the Americas, the first Jesuit pope, and the first non-European pope in over 1200 years. But more than any firsts, Pope Francis became known for something deeper—his unwavering humility, love for the poor, and bold efforts to bring the Church closer to the people.
Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis reminded the world of the true essence of Christianity: compassion, service, and mercy. He lived simply, choosing to reside in a modest guesthouse instead of the lavish Apostolic Palace. He often rode in a humble Fiat instead of a limousine. These were not small gestures—they were powerful sacrifices that reminded us of all that leadership in the Church means service, not power.
One of the most significant sacrifices Pope Francis made was bearing the weight of a rapidly changing world. He fearlessly spoke out about climate change, economic inequality, and the need for the Church to be more inclusive. He welcomed the marginalised and challenged Catholics to “go to the peripheries,” both physically and spiritually.
He encouraged forgiveness and healing, opening doors for those who had felt distant from the Church. He reminded us that “the Lord never tires of forgiving. It is we who tire of asking for forgiveness.” Under his guidance, the Church became more open, more understanding, and more willing to listen.
Pope Francis also prioritised youth, often speaking directly to young people at World Youth Day events, encouraging them to make noise, dream big, and be brave. “Do not be afraid to dream of great things,” he once told a crowd of young pilgrims. And his dreams for the Church were just that—great, courageous, and full of hope.
Now, as his time as our Holy Father ended, we reflect on his lasting impact. He showed us that being a Christian means serving others with love and joy. He challenged the world, and us, to look beyond comfort and toward deeper truths. He made the Church feel more like home.
As students at Sancta Maria College, we are forever grateful. We will carry his words in our hearts: “Let us protect with love all that God has given us.” and “God never tires of forgiving us.” Pope Francis, you have touched our lives with your humility and your courage. You showed us the face of Christ in every person you met. You gave us hope, and you reminded us of what it truly means to walk in faith.
The students at Sancta Maria College will miss you dearly. May your light continue to guide us as we journey forward in faith, love, and service.
