National Youth Jazz Competition was a HIT

Aaron Santoso

In the very early hours of 7 April 2025, our Jazz music students headed down to Tauranga to compete in the 47th National Youth Jazz Competition. This marks a milestone for our school, as it is the first time we entered SIX different bands, all of who performed remarkably well.

The competition brought together schools across the country, with 30 Big bands and 54 Combos competing.  In preparation for this event, our ‘jazzers’ went on a three-day camp, perfecting and fine tuning their playing. This was not only an opportunity to take their musical skills to the next level, but also a fantastic bonding experience that brought the groups closer together.

After a grueling three-hour drive – and a quick stop at Maccas – our musicians took all their hard work from the beginning of the year and left it all on stage.

This year was our largest entry, with 2 Big bands and 4 combos, receiving the following awards.

  • Big Band – Gold
  • Stage Band – Bronze
  • Mom’s Spaghetti – Silver
  • Big Kahuna Burger – Silver
  • Royale with Cheese – Bronze
  • Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster – Emerging

Notably, the judges also complemented our students not only with their musicianship, but with their positive attitude, and respectful demeanor throughout the competition.

A big thanks to all staff and teachers who made this event possible. Special thank you to Mr Gibbs – this was his final music competition with Sancta Maria College, and his lasting impact on the music department will not be forgotten. We’ll miss you!

Congratulations to all those involved. These results are especially impressive considering this was the first competition for many of our performers. We are incredibly proud of all our musicians and are excited to see them perform at future events!
