Punk Rock band, Chopstix, 2025 reign of success

Kaizer Wong

Chopstix is a punk rock band formed by four Sancta Maria College students in February of 2024. The band is a four-piece unit consisting of: Kaizer Wong on guitar and lead vocals, Tristan Gray on guitar and backing vocals, Alejandro Hernandez on bass guitar and backing vocals, and Jakob Yang on drums.

Earlier in 2025, the punk rock quartet participated in New Zealand’s annual music competition Smokefree Rockquest where they debuted their latest song “How Does One Ask A Girl Out on A Date?”, a punk-rock-styled love song, at the regional heats.

Successfully gaining a place in the regional finals, they played their newest and greatest song “Post Argument Indecency”, which was played for the first time.

After their success at RockQuest, the group moved onto preparations (and practice) for their next competition of the year which was Stand Up Stand Out (SUSO for short). They managed to gain their rightful place in the semi-finals (again) this year where they debuted their most recent song “You’re the Reason I’m Miserable”.  Their performance and original song composition managed to secure their spot on SUSO’s finals stage, held in the Auckland Town Hall on 20 September, where they gained ‘overall runner-up’ in the ‘Original-song composition’ category.

2025 marks the second year of Chopstix’s reign, and even with all the great success that has come to the band so far, they’re only just getting started.
