Year 12 Retreat focusses on leadership

Winnie Zou

On Wednesday, 4 March 2026, Year 12 retreat was held in the school auditorium. This year our retreat focused on the theme ‘student leadership’. This retreat helped us to understand the diverse ways we can show leadership within school and in our community.

The day was divided into five sessions. These were led by – Ms. Oliver, Mr. O’Conner, Mr. Bali, and Mrs. Kubala. After these sessions, Alumni from our school came and talked to us about their leadership after they left the school.

Mr Bali’s activity helped us understand leadership better. We were split into smaller groups, and we had to form a ‘dragon’ with the head as a leader and the tail as the most vulnerable of the group. The goal was to protect the most vulnerable member while also tagging other groups tails. This activity highlighted the importance of teamwork as well as trust as this activity relied on the head to successfully guide our team and making sure that the tail was not left vulnerable. This session showed us that to win we need to lead with confidence while also protecting the more vulnerable members of society.

Ms Kubala’s session helped us develop our understanding of leadership by providing valuable insights into leadership from faith. After this we were split into smaller groups to discuss scriptures about leadership shown throughout the bible. Through this session we were able to take away the key points that leaders should prioritise serving, empowering, and sacrificing for others rather than exercising dominance.

At the end of the day, alumni came into to share their experiences on servant leadership. They discussed how they practiced servant leadership during and after their time at school.  They shared experiences and how these helped shape who they are as well as staying true to God’s values is important to being a servant leader.

The Year 12 retreat was an amazing experience – it helped provide each student with important perspectives into the student leadership in school as well as in the community. It inspired us to take a lead while staying true to God’s values.

Thank you to Mr. Tamayo for organising the retreat and the teachers for facilitated our sessions. We also thank the alumni for taking time out of their day to share.
