Year 11HEA learn how physical activity can enhance wellbeing

Aleena Shaju

On Monday 16 March, the Year 11 Health class went on a nature walk to the Auckland Botanic Gardens, spending two hours walking through the different areas of the gardens.  Surrounded by plants, trees, and open green spaces, this trip was part of our mental health unit, where we are learning about different ways to support and improve our wellbeing.

During the walk, we took time to pause to sit down, discuss with each other, and meditate. In the busy and fast-paced world we live in, spending time within a natural environment helped many of us feel calmer and less stressed. It also gave us a chance to disconnect from our devices, which made it easier to focus on the present.

After the walk, we discussed the impacts that spending time in nature can have on our mental health and Hauora.  Many students shared that they felt calmer, happier, and more relaxed during our walk. This showed us how activities like walking outdoors can have a positive impact on our wellbeing.

Overall, the trip was an enjoyable and a valuable experience that helped us better understand the importance of looking after our mental health through physical activity.
