On Wednesday 22 April 2026, acclaimed New Zealand author Brian Falkner visited our school to deliver an engaging presentation to our junior students. Following the presentation, he held a workshop for chosen Year 7 and 8 students, where he shared key points and valuable advice on “how to write like an author”.
During the workshop, Brian explained the important steps involved to creating a successful story. One of the key ideas he focused on was setting. He explained that strong setting helps readers imagine where and when a story takes place, making the story feel more realistic and exciting. Further encouraging students to think carefully about simple details such as the weather when building stories.

Overall, these key points help students provide an enhanced knowledge on how to write ‘just like an author’, making it not just educational but enjoyable for peers; providing an insight into the life of an author and the creative process behind writing books.
Thank you to all teachers, staff, junior students, and especially Brian Falkner who have participated in this special occasion – many students left feeling inspired and motivated to improve on their own writing skills!
