Another stimulating Mathex event

Katie Hamilton

Student’s mathematical abilities were challenged in our annual Mathex competition. This Maths Week (10-14 August 2026) our Year 7-10 students participated in Mathex. Students were separated into groups of four and asked to solve 20 demanding questions within the 30-minute time limit. Students were awarded 5 points for each correct answer and 0 points for any skipped answers.

As the competition commenced, the auditorium erupted with noise, tensions were high as students weaved around tables to check their answers with some students sprinting to markers. As students were meticulously reading and solving, others were celebrating correct answers. Ultimately, the competition proved to be daunting as teams fought for 1st place.

As the competition concluded, teams worked in chaos with some completing all questions – 100 points, minutes before the 30 minutes deadline.

The top two teams from each year level then went on to compete in the Auckland Regional Mathex Championship later in term 3. An event which collects other top Mathex teams from other schools throughout Auckland. Year 9 and 10s went on Wednesday 19 August and Year 7 and 8s went on Thursday 20 August. This fast-paced environment provided a further challenge as they competed against other top performing mathematicians throughout the city.
