Dr Laux’s Christmas tradition lives on

Annette Li and Tina Zhu

During 2025, we (Annette Li and Tina Zhu) endeavoured to continue Sancta Maria College’s tradition of giving back to the community. With the support of former teacher Dr Laux, who generously spared some of her time, we designed and produced gifts for 100 volunteers working at Tōtara Hospice, Manurewa.

This year’s project involved the transformation of bottle caps collected from both students and teachers, into bottle-cap keychains. It was hoped that the keychains will bring joy and remind the volunteers of how much their time and hearts are cherished by the community they continuously support.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Grace Chen, an ex-student of Sancta Maria College, who helped during her term 3 holiday, to package the 100 keychains.

The handmade keychains will be gifted to Tōtara Hospice volunteers on 3 December during the annual volunteer Christmas event at the new Tōtara Hospice’s second shop, in Takanini. While we are leaving Sancta Maria College to pursue tertiary studies next year, we hope that our work has inspired other students to take the lead and continue this yearly tradition instilled by Dr Laux.
