Dramatic finish to Readers Cup

When one thinks of great sporting events, the FIFA World Cup and Olympic Games spring to mind. However, an intense competition of a different sort began today at Sancta Maria College.

David Locke, Hyejin Park, Sarah McCormick, Jaiden Beltran and Trinity Tuineau are the 5 proud Year 9 students who became the representative team for Sancta Maria College at the annual Reader’s Cup. In an intense final they came from behind to clinch the title when David correctly answered the tie break question.

Three teams of avid readers fought for the winning place, having prepared for weeks in advance. The competitors were instructed to read four books, including ‘Rocco’ by Sherryl Jordan and ‘See Ya Simon’ by David Hill, in order to ready themselves for the competition. However, only 5 people could progress to represent the College at the Readers Cup regionals and hopefully nationals.

The winning team has now to read and study a further 5 books for the regional competition to be held in a few months.

It was great to see so many Year 9s step up to the challenge and broaden their literary experience. Many thanks to Ms O’Rourke for organising this competition. We are excited to see how our team fares in the regional competition.
