Green Jam 2018 Inspiring Change

Alex Dougherty, Mikayla Killip and I had the privilege of going to this year’s ‘Green Jam’. It was a wonderful experience for us where we learnt about environmental issues and how we can lead by example to become a part of the change. The theatre was crowded with students from schools around Auckland.

There were two workshops during the day as well as a panel discussion. The first workshop involved, ‘For the Love of bees’, ‘Eco Matters’ and ‘Bin System’. We decided to split up and then share with each other what we had learnt at each of our workshops. Some of the workshops were interactive.

The second workshop involved, ‘Whitebait Connection’, ‘Sustainable Coastlines’, ‘Meola Creek Project’ and ‘Switching Spaces’. We focused on how we should change the way we behave and think towards plastic as well as looking after our waterways.

These workshops were taken by leaders and professionals in this field. These included Erica Finnie, Marisa Pene, Rebbeca Goffin, Cate Jessep, Sophie Tweddle and Malika Krishnamurthy.

We would like to thank Dr Laux and Mrs McCreath for giving us this opportunity. Also thanks to Mrs Colmer for driving us and being with us on the trip.

Green Jam has inspired us to be a part of the change happening to our environment. The three of us look forward to sharing our knowledge on the environment and inspiring others at the school. Hopefully we will get a chance to work with the primary school too.
