Inaugural Pistang Gabi – celebrating Filipino heritage

Patricia Ocampo

2025 was the first year Sancta Maria College held Pistang Gabi, our own version of filo night.

A lot of our school population are Filipinos, hence why we wanted to express and appreciate more of the Filipino heritage within our school. The Flat Bush community is also home to many pinoy’s, and we wanted to give a night of Filipino celebration, close to home.

Many weeks of planning went into this event; from recruiting performances, finding food vendors, and hours of practice perfecting dances. While we had a couple of technical glitches on the night, we managed to deliver a captivating and audience engaging night! We had various bands perform Filipino modern and OPM songs as well as many dances showcasing our traditional folk dances as well as P-POP from the modern-day era.

The crowd seemed to love the Filipino cuisine offered by the food truck, who were constantly engaged with the evening, showing their support throughout the performances.  The night’s success wasn’t just in the performances or supportive crowd; it was also in the sense of pride it gave our community. We proved that even with limited resources and a small team, we were still able to create an unforgettable night.

Overall, the night went wonderfully, and it was a great experience, setting the benchmark for hopefully more cultural nights in the future!
