International students’ trip inspires and captivates

Rotorua, known for its bubbling geothermal wonders and vibrant Māori culture, is one of New Zealand’s most unique and captivating destinations. At the end of term 2 (2025) a group of international students departed Auckland to embark on our much-anticipated annual trip, a journey that promised both excitement and connection with the natural world.

We departed early on 16 June, full of energy and excitement. Our first stop was the breath-taking Waitomo Glow worm Caves, where we were amazed by the magical sight of thousands of tiny glow worms lighting up the darkness. Gliding silently through the cave on a boat, all we could do was look up in silence as thousands of glow worms lit up the ceiling like stars. Afterwards, we travelled to the relaxing Wairakei Terraces, where we enjoyed the geothermal pools and beautiful surroundings. The day ended in Taupō, where we checked into our hotel and shared a delicious dinner together.

We started the second day with a peaceful sailing trip on Lake Taupō, taking in the stunning views. It was a peaceful and grounding experience that many of us will remember for a long time. We then visited the thundering Huka Falls, one of the most powerful waterfalls in New Zealand. The force and power of the water crashing through the narrow gorge was incredible. In the afternoon, we explored Te Puia in Rotorua, where we saw geysers, bubbling mud pools, and experienced Māori culture. That evening’s dinner felt even more special as we reflected on what we had learned about the land, the people, and the stories that shaped this place.

Day three was packed with thrilling activities. We began with zip-lining through the native forest, and for many of us, it was our first time. At first, there were nerves, but once we stepped off the platform and flew through the trees, it was nothing but excitement and freedom. The views from above were incredible, and the encouragement from our peers made it even better. Then, we visited Skyline Rotorua, where we raced down the luge tracks and enjoyed a tasty lunch with scenic views. That evening, we explored the Redwoods Tree walk, where glowing lanterns lit up the forest canopy, creating a peaceful and magical atmosphere for all of us.

On our final day, we travelled to Matamata to visit the famous Hobbiton Movie Set. Even those of us who weren’t huge fans of the movies were amazed by the detail and beauty of the Shire. It truly felt like stepping into a different world. From the round doors to the lush gardens and the Green Dragon Inn, everything was picture-perfect. After the tour, we headed back to Auckland, ending our joyous trip, feeling happy, thankful, and full of amazing memories.

This trip was more than a school excursion. It was a chance to connect with nature, with culture, and with each other. As international students, it reminded us how lucky we are to call New Zealand home, even for a short time. Each day brought something different: awe, peace, excitement, and wonder. From the peaceful moments sailing on Lake Taupō to the thrill of zip-lining and the magic of Hobbiton, every day offered something unique and memorable. And as we returned with full hearts and wide smiles, we knew that these memories would stay with us long after the trip had ended. We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the staff and teachers who made this trip possible. It was a wonderful trip, one that we will always remember as a highlight of our time in New Zealand.
