Orchestral players end the year on a high note

Thirty of Sancta Maria College’s orchestral players from our Primo Orchestra and Symphonia joined forces for a special concert with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra as part of their Play In South project.

Players from the APO mentored our students, along with those from Manurewa High School, Pakuranga College and Pukekohe High School, forming one huge mass orchestra of students and professionals.

The event took place at the Vodafone Events Centre and we filled the whole of the main arena with our instruments, working through two rowdy and bombastic classical pieces: Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyrie and Prokofiev’s Montagues and Capulets.

Our students ranged from Year 7 beginners to our more experienced Year 10s, all of whom received expert guidance from the APO players, who even encouraged students to try other instruments.

It was a great experience for everyone, allowing our young musicians to be part of a memorable live concert experience when so many performance opportunities have been denied them throughout this challenging year.

Well done to all involved, and thank you Mr Gibbs, Head of Music for organising.
