Preparing for camp

“It’s going to be exciting. It’s going to be fun to try new things and to conquer our fears. A great time to bond with others and to get out of our comfort zone – overall, it will just be a great time.” Jayden Lai, year 8.

“I admit I’m excited to go to camp and leave my annoying younger siblings (but I do love them), though they’ll probably go through my room. I am also excited to spend more time with my friends from other classes, I think we will be better friends when we come back because we can hang out more,” says Ella Dickens (Year 8).

On September 25, the Year 8s will be going to the YMCA camp in Hunua. For 4 days and 3 nights! This’ll be the longest time away from home for a lot of Year 8s. They will need a lot of things because of all the fun, muddy and exciting activities available! Important things such as: clothes, torch, clothes, insect spray, clothes, water bottles and did I mention clothes? Some of us were given good advice from the Year 9s that went last year. Their advice went something like:

Bring baby wipes!

Bring insect repellent!

Try EVERYTHING!

Packing for camp has been crazy in itself! We went from only needing a backpack to needing a small suitcase, to needing a medium suitcase! Most of us are very excited, but we know some of us will miss home (and rice) more than others.

“I packed my pillow, bedsheets – so that I can sleep comfortably. We also must pack a lot of clothes, towels – everything, basically,” comments Dennis Tam on packing.

Camp will be an unforgettable experience for all Year 8s. In between the laughing, staying up late, the fun activities, we will all become closer and better friends. We believe that we will come back different – but better. We might even overcome a fear while there! All of us will miss our family, even if we don’t want to admit it. Some of us might even miss school!

We’d like to thank the teachers (especially Miss Samaeli, Mr Camp and Miss Black) who have put in an extraordinary effort to pull this together to make it great and unforgettable for every one of us.
