The Great Debate

On March 3, three Sancta Maria College students competed in the annual weekend debating competition organised by Auckland Schools Debating. These 3 students are Danica Loulie-Wijtenburg, Kelly Mascarenhas and Zoe Chou.

This was the first time that Sancta Maria College has entered a team into this type of weekend competition. We spent the day competing with various high school debating teams from across Auckland, such as Marist College, Mt Roskill Grammar, St Dominic’s and Westlake Girls.

The team participated in 4 debates over the course of the day, winning the first two. The motions of the day concerned providing free government health care for people with unhealthy lifestyles, providing affirmative action for Maori in limited entry university courses, and prioritising practical life skills over more theoretical subjects.

It was a great opportunity for us to develop our debating skills in the fields of impromptu presentation, writing, style and communication. This experience has meant we are prepared for the coming year of regional debating competitions, where we will be competing in the advanced open category.
