Marielle Venida claimed two individual golds in the Junior 100 and 200m as well as being part of the successful Counties 4×100 relay team at the North Island Secondary School Track and Field Championships at the weekend. Held at the Tauranga Domain, the event also saw Tanya Murray take second place in the Senior Shot Put with a personal best of 13.17m and 7th in the Hammer with a throw of 39.45m.
Marielle, an exceptionally talented athlete, ran 12.51 in the 100m and 25.55 in the 200m. Commenting on her performance she says, “It was definitely a good experience. It was also tiring (especially) since I was injured. But (winning the) 200m was definitely a surprise that I was able to come first.”
Marielle sustained the injury after her 100m race but did not let this hold her back.
Erica Lim finished 8th in the Senior 200m final (recording a personal best of 26.68 in the heats) and missed out on qualifying for the 100m final by the narrowest of margins, just 0.01 seconds. In the Junior field events Nina Wilson took 7th place in the Discus throwing 27.6m and 14th in Shot Put with a throw of 9.32m.
A very successful weekend for Sancta Maria College students at the North Island Secondary School Track and Field Championships.
