Thursday concert a treat for the ears

Another great evening for our students as they showed off their musical talents on Thursday night. The concert was the first of three fund-raising concerts, aimed at purchasing a grand piano for the new St Luke’s Church once it is constructed.

This concert was able to give SMC’s 3 main ensembles: the Concert Band, the Big Band and the Chamber Orchestra another opportunity to showcase the items they will be performing at the KBB festival later this year.

The school Concert band, conducted by Mr Arthur, opened the concert with 2 pieces, “March Op 99” and “Fantastic Beasts”, followed by the Jazz Combos “Midnight Quartet” and “The Octatonics” directed by Mr Cho. These showcased some amazing solos by our talented jazz musicians.

These acts were then followed by the Junior Choir, directed by Mr Gibbs and the Senior Choir, Sanctus, conducted and directed by Mr Roberson. The choirs were able to delight the audience’s ears with their harmonious voices performing songs such as the “La La Land Medley”.

The Chamber Orchestra, directed by Mr Gibbs, was the last group to perform in the first half. They played tremendously with their heart-warming melodies from their pieces “La La Land” and “Uno Che Grido Amore”.

The Clarinet Quintet also entertained the audiences with their piece, followed by a solo performance from our skilled vocalist Anna Nguyen, with Phoebe Kong on the piano.

The concert closed with a big bang, as Mr Cho’s Big Band performed 3 pieces, which featured one of our talented vocalist Daniella Joven, who sang “So Danco Samba”, and with the band playing “Splanky” and “Tweet Fatigue”, which also featured great solos from Adrian Vargas, Phoebe Kong, Minju Kim, Jenna Aspeling, and especially Andrew Choi with his triangle solo.

The students in the ensembles and the music department would like to thank all the family and friends who attended the concert.
