A day in the forest

Fourteen of our students headed off to Waiuku Forest yesterday to compete in the Auckland Secondary Schools Orienteering Championships. The students performed well, with Alicia McGivern placing 8th in the Y7/8 Championship group with a time of 26.08 minutes. Isaac Sheng finished 4th in the Y7/8 boys’ standard section with a time of 26.14.

Our students had to compete against over 1000 students from a number of schools throughout the Auckland region. With our clip cards, compasses and maps, we ventured through the forest searching for the contours marked on the map hoping to get a good placing in our divisions.

We all felt tired at the end but had a sense of accomplishment at having completed the orienteering course. All fourteen Sancta Maria College competitors had a great day.

Orienteering is a new sport in our school that has rapidly grown in popularity. Earlier this term we competed in the six-sprint series at different schools around East Auckland.
