AKSS Ultimate Senior Outdoor Champs

Ultimate Frisbee is one of Sancta Maria College’s newest core sports available to students and is continuing to grow.

Our mixed team competed against over 200 players in the College Sport Auckland Outdoor Ultimate Championships at Bruce Pulman Park on the March 17. Miss Smith, Mr Camp and Coach Andre have been coaching and supporting us during our training and tournaments.

Ultimate Frisbee (or just Ultimate) is a fast-growing sport in New Zealand schools and combines elements of netball, touch rugby and American football, where players need to move the disc into the opposite endzone by passing. Players require speed, stamina, agility and the technical skill of throwing and catching a flying disc.

The team were placed in Pool D, playing against Westlake Boys High School 1, Auckland Boys Grammar School 3 and Pakuranga College. From there, we played against Rutherford College, Selwyn Red and Black, and Takapuna Grammar 2. The team did not place at this tournament but were able to get two wins under their belt against both Selwyn teams.

Our opponents, being very tough to beat, had a fun time playing against us, helping us learn the rules, especially in an outdoor atmosphere when we usually have training and games indoors, and giving us feedback after the games in “Spirit Circles”.

We all enjoyed the day and had lots of fun. “It was exhausting but I learnt a lot throughout the day,” a member of the team says, being new to the sport this year.

For most players, this was just a warm-up for the upcoming New Zealand Secondary Schools Ultimate Championships, where it is just going to get tougher for our composite team.
