Last Friday, 16 students attended the Epro8 Challenge. This is an engineering, problem solving and innovation challenge that requires students to compete against other schools in numerous tasks. This competition was an enjoyable experience for all the students and challenged them to think outside the box.

Wise words spoken by the greatly loved and admired Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who devoted her life to helping the poor, sick and dying. It is fitting that the Mother Teresa Service Programme, under the direction of Mr Piggin, should be named after the saint.

The Year 13 P.I.L.O.T (Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow) programme is a truly inspirational event. The event focuses on what it means to be a Pacific Islander in modern New Zealand and forces Year 13 students of Pacific heritage to deeply consider the values and principles that guided their parents and grandparents in their migration away from their homes.

Ultimate Frisbee is one of Sancta Maria College’s newest core sports available to students and is continuing to grow.

In July this year, a group of our Year 11-13 students are going to Samoa, as part of an Outreach field trip where they are given the opportunity to continue building a relationship with Chanel College in Apia, Samoa. They will practice their understanding of Catholic Social Justice while making a difference to those in need.

Last Thursday saw over 60 Year 13 Geography students head to Rotorua. This was part of their research internal focussed on tourism development in Rotorua, most significantly what brings tourists to Rotorua.

Practices have now begun for our enthusiastic chess players. Every Tuesday Week A and Wednesday Week B the Chess Club have their practices. This year we are not going to enter any competitions because many members are beginners, so we are going to wait until next year.

The Junior Star of the week is Marielle Venida. After breaking 2 records (one of which had stood for 8 years) at athletics day, she went on to represent the school at the Counties Manukau competition, where she became the champion in Junior Girls 100 and 200m.

Crisha Cruz was presented with her Star of the Week award by Ms Moore at assembly on Tuesday morning.
