At assembly last week Martina Kleis spoke about the difference her mother has made to the education of students in Samoa by using her connections with our College and the wider community. Her mother’s awareness of what is happening in the world and solidarity with those less fortunate gave us an insight into Catholic Social Justice in action.
In February this year, Cyclone Gita caused destruction and havoc in Samoa, Tonga and other Pacific Islands. This cyclone wiped away houses, buildings, churches and schools.
After Cyclone Gita, Martina’s mum found out that our school was going to be throwing away old chairs, desks and other classroom furniture. Hearing this she decided to take action as these old resources could be used for another purpose, for the girls in Samoa.
Mrs Kleis and her SMOGA group of ’86 (Saint Mary’s Old Girls Association) decided to fundraise to get these resources over to their old high school that was severely damaged by the cyclone. Furthermore, the school also generously provided teaching materials. When these arrived in Samoa the girls were super excited to have desks and chairs to support their learning.
When all hope seems lost due to natural disasters, there are always helping hands reaching out to assist and comfort those in need.
