Jazz Night featured artist – Helen Pahulu

“I thought it was a pretty cool instrument, no girls were playing it at the time!” says Helen Pahulu. Helen has been playing the trombone for around 4 years. She chose the trombone because it was different and because she wanted to be different.

Thanks to her inspiration, Mr Cho, Helen started the trombone and now is one of the best players in the big band. Helen says, “Jazz is the coolest type of music, you can improvise, there are no wrong notes!”

Following encouragement from Mr Cho, Helen is planning to continue playing the trombone in University.

As well as being a trombone player, Helen is a singer. At school she is part of the choir and big band, and outside of school, she is part of a church band. In the big band, Helen sings ‘Route 66’ and ‘Respect’. Helen has also composed a piece called ‘Repertoire’.

On Jazz night, the combo will be performing Helen’s original composition and ‘Route 66’ as well as ‘Respect’.

Come along to the Jazz night and prepare to be mind blown by Helen’s amazing trombone playing and her beautiful singing. You wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity.
