The sweet sound of jazz filled the air on Friday evening as the inaugural Sancta Maria College Jazz Night swung into action. And did it swing! From jazz standards like ‘Take the A train’ to Jenna Aspeling’s original composition ‘Moody’ every tune was played to perfection to an appreciative audience.

The Junior Jazz Orchestra got the evening off to a smooth start with their renditions of ‘C Jam Blues’ and were joined by vocalist Kayla Kippen for “Billie Jean’. Next to take the stage were the very accomplished ‘Blue Notes’ who with vocalists Kayla and Daniella Joven regaled the audience with “Sonnymoon for Two’, ‘All of Me’ and ‘Sunny Side of the Street’.
The Funk Band then took to the stage to set everybody’s feet tapping. Next came ‘The Blues Clues’ whose set included a stunning performance of “Satin Doll’ with Maris Balili on vocals.
Music teacher and bass guitarist Mr Thomas Cho then took the stage with his combo ‘The Sprinkle’ to give the students a short break. Their upbeat set was very well received by the audience.
For the final third of the concert we were treated to the College’s premier jazz combo ‘The Swingin’ 8s’ followed by The Big Band. Superb playing and standout solos from both groups left the audience wanting more. Jenna Aspeling’s original composition ‘Moody’ featured Jenna and Minju Kim on saxophone, leading on to ‘Song for my father’ and their set was completed when vocalist Lisa Greenhead joined them on stage for a silky performance of ‘Take the A Train’.
To close the show we had the Big Band on stage. Their set included ‘Count Bubba’s Revenge’ featuring a stand out saxophone solo by Adrian Vargas, ‘Route 66’ and ‘Green Dolphin Street’, the highlight being ‘Route 66’ with a powerful performance from vocalist Helen Pahulu who really lit up the stage.
A fantastic night and hopefully the first of many.
