Polished Jazz performances win medals

Aaron Santoso

Our jazz department recently competed in the National Youth Jazz Competition in Tauranga. After rehearsing and practicing for weeks throughout the term our bands proudly performed their pieces and received outstanding awards.

The 46th year of this annual competition consisted of 23 big bands and 48 combos competing, making the competition intense. Our school sent three student combos and the big band, both achieving outstanding results. In preparation for this event, the students had performed in a warm-up concert one week prior to the competition. Their hard work and efforts were reflected in their results.

After the long drive to Tauranga, our musicians played brilliantly, showing off all their hard work over the past few months with polished performances. They earned the following results:

  • Big band – Bronze
  • Peach mango pie – Gold
  • Pickled Jam – Silver
  • Mac n cheese – Bronze

A big thanks to Mr. Gibbs for all the organisation and preparation for this competition, and Mrs. Price for helping supervise the day. The experience was a great opportunity for our jazz musicians, serving as a solid steppingstone in their musical journey.
