On Friday, 1 May 2026, the annual Pompallier Shield was hosted at our very own Sancta Maria College campus. This annual event is a competition where 16 Catholic schools across our dioceses gather to celebrate Māori Culture and very best of our students’ faith, hope, unity, and friendship, through Waiata, speeches and performance.
The event started at 12:30pm, where all schools met at St. Luke’s Parish with a powerful karanga. Our Sancta Maria College Kapa Haka led the congregation with a beautiful waiata, followed by a few words from Sancta Maria College staff, Mr Mackenzie and Mr Rimamate. Students then had the opportunity to share kai before starting the competition. Our students exemplified the school’s values exceptionally well, showing support, sportsmanship and hospitality.
These students represented us in the following categories:
- Junior Māori Scripture – Faatoina Puni
- Junior Scripture – Beerlahairoi Fuimaono
- Junior Oratory – Sydney Santos
- Senior Māori Scripture – Isabella Alipate-Roberts
- Senior Scripture – Zoe Martis
- Senior Oratory – Kael Sunga
- Waiata/Himene – Eliyana Eliki-Jones, Devon Mah-Kwan, Akosita Tuungafasi, Sinah-Lei Lauaki, Nathan Mlinde, Stacey Palusa, Rosie Finau, Loben Rivers, Hezekiah Faletagoai, Kayla Jones
Afterwards, students were able to enjoy lunch in the C block courtyard giving them an opportunity to meet their fellow brothers and sisters from other schools. Excitement grew as we headed to the auditorium for the results of the competition.

St. Dominics Catholic College were passed the Pompallier Shield candle at the end of prizegiving, as they will be the 2027 hosts.
This competition would not have been possible without our teachers’ unconditional support. Thank you to Mr Tamayo, Ms Oliver, Ms Hiddleston, Mr Rimamate, assisting teachers, prefects, student volunteers, food technology staff, and all participating schools for making this event so memorable.
We wish our students well, who will be participating in the Pompallier Shield Competition for 2027.
