Jazz Bands see Success

Minju Kim (Year 13)

Just before lockdown, the jazz students spent days busily playing music. With both the KBB Music Festival and the Auckland Jazz Competition in full roar, music students from all year levels enjoyed performing their well-rehearsed pieces, listening to other schools, and learning from their experiences.

Our school has brought back amazing results from KBB – with the Jazz Orchestra achieving a Bronze award, and the Big Band bringing home a Gold Award as well as the Tour Time Trophy for Best Overall Improvisation!

KBB also saw six of our students playing in the prestigious honours band – Minju Kim, Jenna Aspeling, Andrew Choi, Felix Cheng, Yesel Wang, and former student Samantha Bottom, were all selected to participate in this event with other high-level secondary school musicians from around Auckland. Check out their performance here: https://www.facebook.com/kbbmusicfestival/videos/379655883525951

The Auckland Jazz Competition results also blew everyone away. The results are as of below:

Outstanding Soloist – Jenna Aspeling

Jazz Orchestra – Gold
The Fantails – Platinum and Finalist
The Keas – Gold
The Kererus – Silver
The Wekas – Silver
The Tuis – Bronze

The Kiwis – Bronze

Congratulations to all of these students, and especially to Mr Thomas Cho, the Director of all jazz ensembles at our school.
