The Thanksgiving Mass of 2018 was truly one to remember. Not only was it the farewell to all of our Year 13 students but also the farewell to family members that have given back to the school in ways we could never imagine.

Martina Kleis received our top award, ‘The Navigator Trophy’ from Mr Reuben O’Neill at last night’s senior prizegiving. The evening highlighted the successes of so many students. Elizabeth Ralph-Smith is the 2018 Dux with Alex Venn-Brown the Proxime Accesit. Those present were entertained by music from the College Chamber Orchestra, Sanctus (our choir) and the Big Band. On Thursday 25 October four Maori students accompanied by Mrs Holmes were privileged to be invited to take part in the Year 10 KATTI trip held at Nga Kete Wananga Marae located at MIT. This course, aimed at helping students think about tertiary career options, is making a difference to the number of young Māori who are staying at school and gaining national qualifications. It is a leadership and development programme for high school students from Year 10-13.

Lights flashing. Everyone clapping. Your class walk onto the stage… you dance your heart out! You are the star!… Not exactly… Last Friday (the 26th) the Year 8s performed a dance they have been working on for weeks. Everyone was nervous, but most of us were also excited. The dance was put together by the homeroom class, their peer support leaders and with their teacher’s help.

The pressure was on for the Year 10s participating in the cake decorating challenge with students racing to complete their designs in time. Judging, by popular vote, took place at lunch time on Friday and everything had to be ready, and perfect, in time.

Tall Blacks basketballer Finn Delaney was guest speaker at our annual College Sports Awards evening. He shared his experiences of battling through adversity and how through demonstrating character and determination he reached his goal of becoming a better player. He was very popular among our students and a wonderful role model and ambassador for the Breakers and NZ basketball.

Gabriel Nito, Martina Kleis, Angelika Bilbao, Manvis Wong and Niamh Walsh have been an integral part of the News Centre team since they joined as young Year 10 students. Now, at the end of Year 13 they are preparing for their final examinations before leaving us to head off to tertiary education.
