The College open grade boys basketball team have had a good season so far. Competing in the Open A Grade (Central/East) for the first time (highest grade available to our school) they finished top of pool play (undefeated) with big wins over Dilworth, Sacred Heart and Botany Downs. The team also finished the season as Runner Up in Central/East to qualify for the Auckland Championships played on 15 August.

This morning the College was delighted to welcome back Fr Ezio Blasoni to lead our celebration of the Feast of the Assumption.

Do you remember last year’s event? There was so many innovative products on sale, all designed and produced by teams of students from local Colleges, including our own Year 13 Business Studies class. Well, it is happening again tomorrow night, Thursday, August 16, 5-7pm.

“Their passion for the game led them to win,” says coach Mr Tamayo, “they thought of each other as brothers.”

And 12 games played, twelve games won, shows how this group of young basketball players were carried through a successful season bonded by this special spirit.

From the 6-10 August, the Peace team combined with the enviro team hosted Enviro and Peace week. The week turned out to be a huge success, with both teams coming together to promote and create awareness of the environmental issues occurring within our society.

On Thursday, the Vinnies group gathered for their Term 3 meeting. The school team was very honoured to have co-ordinator Gene bring with him a former Sancta Maria College student and even a fellow Vincentian from across the Tasman to visit us and share with us their wisdom.

Mikayla Dance, a Year 13 student and an accomplished swimmer, recently competed at the Auckland Secondary Schools Individual Champs. The meet was held in Henderson at the West Wave Aquatic Centre.

Last week saw multiple wins from our sports teams, beginning with the Under 15 girls football team winning their game against Mission Heights Junior College 3-0. The first two goals were scored by Genevieve Churton, the third by Chloe Presnall.

On August 1, Sancta Maria College students participated in the annual Auckland Stand Up Stand Out, a local competition that showcases performance of a variety of musical genres such as contemporary, R.&.B, popular, jazz and Pacifica beats. This was held at Otara Music Arts Centre and this year, a large number of our students competed in a number of categories such as: group vocals, solo vocals, band, and for the first time, dance.

Year 7 and 8 dancers had the opportunity to perform at the Howick and Pakuranga Dance Festival on the August 6-7.They put in a lot of hard work, practicing every Tuesday lunch and on Thursday late starts since term 2. The holidays were used for practicing too, coming in twice to finish learning the dance. Then, in term 3, just a few weeks before the performance, practices took place every day at lunch, late starts and during class resulting in an amazing performance. We couldn’t have done it without the help of Miss Picot who made all of this possible.
