Meet Our 2022 Prefects 5: Sport Prefects

Cyprus Causer (Year 11)

In this series of articles, we find out about our student leaders, their backgrounds, roles and ambitions. Today we feature our Sport Prefects, Margarett Ropati, Jorja McKay, and Jeremy Sasis. The 2022 Sports Prefects are passionate to improve the athletic areas of SMC. They will be working alongside the Sports Committee and Co-ordinators to organise events and create more opportunities for students to get involved with sports.

Margarett’s goal as a Prefect is to become more confident in leading. She loves netball and says, “Netball is hands down my favourite sport to play mainly because I grew up in the game, playing alongside people I love and building relationships with my teammates.” She hopes to use her experience in netball to provide ideas that will build the sporting aspects of our school.

Jorja aspired to be a Prefect in order to make a difference and continue the welcoming environment around sports. She has loved playing netball ever since she started in Year 4, and now coaches the sport. Jorja enjoys learning history because it helps her understand how events impact the world and it helps her expand her way of thinking. Her goal as a Prefect is to get more students involved with sports by having lunchtime competitions or more sport days. Jorja says, “Sport is a great way to meet people, stay healthy and be a team player.”

Jeremy’s sporting passion is basketball and skateboarding. He has been playing basketball since he was seven and took up skateboarding two years ago. His goal as a Prefect is to increase the interest of the ‘not as popular’ sports at school. Jeremy’s favourite subject is Physical Education Studies since he enjoys anything that requires physical movement. He says, “I want to be able to increase participation in any sport throughout the school, hopefully helping younger people to find their passion like I did.”

Their advice to future aspiring Prefects is to believe in yourselves, work hard and to do things that you are passionate about. Margarett says, “If you surround yourself with the right people and keep your self-esteem strong, you’ll be able to overcome every issue in front of you and reach your full potential.”

The year ahead looks promising with new ideas from these enthusiastic Prefects. We wish them the best of luck in their new roles!
