This week has had a Careers focus on preparing our students, particularly the seniors, for study in engineering. To start off, Tuesday saw representatives from engineering firm Arup come to speak to students from Years 9 to 13 to explain what engineering is about. The session flew by, making the two hours in our school library pass quickly.

Time passes by so quickly, that the Chinese study group from Shanghai Jincai Experimental Junior Middle School have completed their study tour in NZ and returned back to China. At the same time, there is another group of students who are preparing for their exciting journey to NZ.

One of our school’s combos, Midnight Quartet, and our Big Band have both made the finals of the Auckland Jazz and Blues Club Secondary School competition. This is a huge achievement as the field of jazz is dominated by a few select schools in Auckland and to be part of this event shows how far we have come.
Recently our school counsellor, Mrs Goddard, was invited to Oxford University to present research she has done with our students. She has been looking into why girls are more stressed than boys.

We congratulate Ella Flores and Mary Colmenar for being named the winners of the 2019 East Auckland Performing Arts Showcase for their duet of ‘I Can Do Better Than That’ from the musical ‘The Last 5 Years’. Hosted by Howick Youth Council, it was a fantastic evening to celebrate the young talent of East Auckland. Sancta Maria College was represented by four acts. Meggy Laguda, Anna Nguyen, Mary Colmenar and Ella Flores all took to the stage. Mary also claimed third place for her solo performance of ‘She Used To Be Mine’ and ‘When He Sees Me’.
