Despite a long and shaky 5-hour drive, the Year 13 History trip to the Bay of Islands was well-enjoyed by all who attended. The focus of the trip was the New Zealand Northland Wars, where the native Maori tribes from the Bay of Islands were brought into conflict with the British settlers. This conflict centred around different understandings of land, authority and ownership.

This term for science, students from 8BRN, 8CLE, 8DNN and 8LIS have been working with the Wonder Project completing the Rocket Challenge. Each class was allocated an ambassador who helped us learn about things like Newton’s Three Laws, aerodynamics, air pressure, centre of pressure (we needed the centre of pressure to be back towards the fins) and gave us ideas on how to modify our rockets.

For Gabriel Lesoa, baseball runs in the family. His brother has represented New Zealand and his grandfather and uncles have all played the sport. That’s why nine years ago when Gabriel first picked up the bat, there was no surprise that he instantly fell in love with the game.

For the past 8 weeks, 25 of our students, including Alex Dougherty (pictured), have been busily preparing to sit their learners licence driving test. Passing the test will allow the students to begin driving on the roads with a supervisor and begin the journey to becoming a fully licenced driver.

Well the weather held out on Saturday for the clash between our 1st XV and Sacred Heart played at Sancta Maria College. Player numbers were down due to injuries and illness but the boys gave it their best shot at reversing the previous result which went in Sacred Heart’s favour.

Catherine Pask, Healthy Schools coordinator and Kate Smallman, Diabetes specialist nurse visited the Year 13 Biology students to teach them about the causes and current treatments for Diabetes. The students are completing an internal assessment based on the interpretation of glucoregulation.

Another great success for the Enviro team. On Saturday, they fundraised $600.70 for the completion of the butterfly garden which is already taking shape at school. Mikayla Killip, Elijah Gepiga, Zeth Oliver, Karl Guarin and Martin Cheung took this opportunity to fulfil their school service hours.

Saturday marked yet another amazing day of netball and the final grading round of Sancta Maria netball teams playing at Howick Pakuranga Netball Courts (HPNC). All teams played exceptionally well, showing tremendous teamwork, superb shooting, communication, attacking and defending!

Today was the last day in the grading round and all players tried their hardest. There were improved results from some teams. Two games were Sancta vs Sancta; 8A vs 8B and 7C vs 7D.

Almost the entire school showed up in mufti in order to raise money for the 40 Hour famine. We did this by donating a gold coin for the privilege of not wearing school uniform. As well as the mufti day, many students also took part in the actual 40 Hour famine, which will hopefully be able to raise lots of money for the children of South Sudan.
