The echoing of men at war and gun shots rang out in the imagination of the Year 12 history students as they explored the battle fields of the Waikato region, where the bloody wars of the Waikato conflicts once occurred.

In this series of articles, we find out about our student leaders, their background, roles and ambitions. Today we feature our cultural prefects, Shawna Stowers, Bo Min Cho and Patrick Florendo.

Nine students from Years 7 to 9 represented the College in the Zone Swimming sports. We had students participating in the Junior Under 13 girls and boys 50m butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle.

At the latest of a series of university presentations, Year 13 students were able to learn more about their study options at the University of Auckland. The talk was run by Teri Fong, the university’s advisor for schools in Auckland.

Four prefects (Katrina Chan, Mia Gilchrist, Danica Loulie-Wijtenburg and David Patlong) along with members of staff organised a climate change information session to be held during period three for those that couldn’t attend the Auckland climate movement in Aotea Square. These prefects invited students to come to the auditorium where they could be a part of the solution to climate change. This event saw students stand up to make our country’s politicians aware of and highlight the key issues surrounding climate change.

While SMC students were pouring out of the gates to get home, many parents and prospective students came to tour Sancta Maria College and take an application pack for a chance to attend our school.

From the March 4-8 a number of activities took place to recognise Sea Week. During Sea Week the Environment Team raised awareness about what happens to the rubbish in our drains. It was to help people understand that all the rubbish dropped in the drains eventually get flushed out into the ocean which will then kill sea life.

Oscar Stewart and Erica Lim were our first Star Award winners for 2019, being presented with their certificates at assembly on Tuesday morning.
