Sancta Maria College’s portrayal of, “The Good Soul of Szechuan,” at Howick’s Uxbridge Theatre saw fourteen Sancta Maria College Year 12 students take on characters of this play as part of their NCEA Level 2 Drama internal. The main character of Bertolt Brecht’s play, Shen Te, was performed by Ella Flores, while her alter ego ‘cousin’, Shui Ta was played by Meggy Laguda.

They covered their eyes as streams of tears flowed down their faces. It was so difficult, but the students persevered.

2018 has seen the start of a new initiative for recognizing Maori and Pasifika culture at Sancta Maria College. Although the school has had the Kapa Haka and Polynesian dance groups perform at Cultural festivals in the past, the school is looking to take an even bigger step in their cultural responsiveness journey.

Despite the bitter cold, a few of our history students trooped their way to the Auckland University. There, they spent a whole day gaining insights for this year’s history scholarship theme, which is ‘Myth in Nations’ History’.

At assembly, Niamh Walsh talked about the Sir Peter Blake Trust. Niamh is encouraging us all to wear red socks on Friday to help carry on Blake’s legacy, showing what Kiwis do best.

The idea that there is a whole story behind a poem was brought to life today as students at Sancta Maria College were lucky enough to experience a captivating, intriguing and unique presentation of poetry through acting and plays.

Dunking a teacher or fellow student with a bucket of cold water proved to be one of the main drawcards at the Year 10 Market Day this afternoon.

The Big Band, conducted by the talented Mr Cho performed Route 66, Count Bubba’s Revenge and Groove Merchant, with our featured soloists Adrian Vargas, Peter Brzozowski, and Helen Pahulu, who also did an amazing job on vocals.

On 26 June, the students involved in Chamber groups (Chamber orchestra, Primo Orchestra, Light Orchestra, Accordia, Harmonique, Junior Choir, Sanctus, Les Mousquetaires) performed in front of a large audience. It was a chance for everyone to showcase the musical pieces performed at previous competitions such as the Big Sing and the Chamber Music Competition.

Leah Dawson is one of a group of Year 10 art students who collaboratively created a rosary out of papier mache. The impressive art work has now been installed in the reception foyer of the College.
